一 |     Geneva, Oct 20 (UNI) The World Health Organization (WHO) said that Covid-19 is still a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the WHO's highest alert level.

The announcement came although the number of weekly deaths is almost at its lowest level since the pandemic began.

The WHO's International Health Regulations Emergency Committee said on Wednesday after its quarterly assessment meeting last week that despite a decline in severe cases of Covid-19, and the falling number of weekly deaths, deaths from Covid-19 nevertheless remain high compared with other respiratory viruses.

It also warned of Covid-19-related complications and post-Covid-19 conditions, with the full impact of these still not completely understood. The outbreak could also evolve during the upcoming winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, the committee said.

Meanwhile, the current gaps in global surveillance of Covid-19 have hindered early identification and evaluation of the virus' evolution. With the virus expected to continue evolving, the committee said that the genetic and antigenic characteristics of future variants cannot yet be reliably predicted. Evolving variants may pose challenges to current vaccines and therapeutics, the committee warned.

"Given the above considerations, the committee concurred that continued coordination of the international response is necessary," and considered that "the situation remains dynamic and requires frequent reassessments, and that the termination of the PHEIC, when considered feasible, should be implemented as safely as possible."

The committee recommended that there should be three key priorities in the future: strengthening surveillance and achieving vaccination targets for at risk-groups; continuing to increase access to affordable therapeutics; and strengthening pandemic preparedness planning, while continuing to protect the most at-risk groups.

UNI/XINHUA PRT。    (ECNS) -- Datong City in north China's Shanxi Province saw its agricultural imports and exports exceed 250 million yuan (about $35.7 million) in the first half of this year, with notable growth in both trade volume and product quality.        Datong Customs has introduced full-cycle services and smarter supervision across the agricultural supply chain. Working with local agricultural and market regulatory authorities, it carried out joint inspections, training, guidance and problem-solving services, visiting more than 20 enterprises during the first half of the year.    The Datong Municipal Commerce Bureau has also adopted a tailored "one enterprise, one policy" approach. In Tianzhen County, a cross-border e-commerce and miscellaneous grains industrial park has been established, bringing together nine agricultural e-commerce companies and creating a digital channel for local agricultural products to reach overseas markets.    Customs authorities have also stepped up support for local exporters. In Hunyuan County, officials have worked with enterprises to facilitate exports, while a company in Lingqiu County received one-on-one guidance on registration procedures for exporting chili sauce to Mongolia.    Datong Customs has also helped leading companies, including Tianzhen Bocheng Vegetable Co., Ltd., obtain AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) certification. Measures such as online certificate issuance and streamlined customs clearance procedures have further improved efficiency.    Processed food exports have emerged as a key driver of growth. In the first half of the year, Datong's tomato paste exports surged 476.2% year on year, while buckwheat flour exports rose 47%.    Dehydrated vegetables from Tianzhen County have also been showcased at several international exhibitions, helping local companies secure orders worth millions of dollars.    Datong has continued to expand the overseas reach of its agricultural products. Locally produced tomato paste has entered markets including Russia, Mali, Moldova and Gambia, while the city exported tomato sauce to the Republic of Korea for the first time.    Local companies have also participated in major international food exhibitions, including SIAL Paris and the Global Traditional Food and Nutrition Products Expo, securing multiple cooperation agreements. Meanwhile, international recognition of "Datong Hao Liang" (Datong Good Grains), the city's regional agricultural brand, has continued to grow.    (By Tang Yuxian)                    。
